05:53 pm Someone make me go to bed at a sensible time tonight. Then there might be a chance that I'll get up at a sensible time, too.
Today I've done a load of ironing, watched The Tudors again, and watched three hours of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
I think I find George Boleyn more interesting than I should. After all, and giving away no spoilers, he's not a nice guy. But then that's what I find interesting. He's hopeless with Anne, as well. I'm tempted to say he's such an arse because he's completely socially inept. Then again, I don't think he actually cares about anyone except himself, so maybe not.
I also want to write fic about Mark Smeaton. But for the idea I have, to be sure it's in-character, I really have to have seen the rest of the series, and that's not going to be for another... four weeks? Then again, it's not likely to be very long or very interesting, so I might not bother.
The other fic idea I have involves them both. I've been sort of trying to avoid thinking about it, because it's not a nice idea. I'm also not sure if anyone would be interested in reading it. And it's not something I've written before. Oh, yeah, and while it has a middle and an end, it has no beginning yet, in my head XD

11:54 pm Guh.
I think I may have expired slightly because of the last two minutes of The Tudors. Henry and More looking at the stars? Henry and Charles being cuddly? ...Love.

08:46 pm - Picnic in the Rain Today was fun. I lazed around all morning in my pjs, finally watched the John Barrowman 'why am I gay' thing - it was pretty good - had a shower, and went out to a picnic.
We knew it was going to rain. We still set up on the top of West Wycombe hill. It was hilarious, actually. There were ten or fifteen of us there, and then it started tipping it down. We tried to hide ourselves (and the food) under a waterproof poncho thing and several umbrellas. It failed slightly, and we got rather wet. Then decided to go hide in the cars of the people who'd driven there... and then it stopped raining! We stayed in the carpark though, and I showed off my staff (not that I was much good; I'm out of practice), and various people did poi, juggling, and diablo.
Some people left, and then because it was threatening rain again, we decamped to Aya's house. Given that there were about a dozen of us, and some of them hadn't met her before, it worked out pretty well. I think the trampoline, zipwire, giant chess set and kitten helped. The kitten is so cute. I want him <3
In other news, Chris had decided to be called Kit XD It's fair enough - it's a perfectly valid shortening of Christopher, and if he's gonna change, then going to uni is the right time to do it. It's gonna be hard to switch my brain over to thinking of him as Kit, though. Especially since I have a transexual fae pirate character called Kit! Current Music: Caramelldansen (Speedycake Remix)

12:14 pm Why is it that whenever I post in a certain RP, no one else posts for, like, days afterwards? Am I just awful and put them all off? D8 ...or maybe I'm just paranoid.
I'm off out in an hour or so, to a picnic. My friend Chris is organising it. I kinda haven't seen him in months ^^;; Thankfully people I have spoken to recently are also going XD
It should be fun, especially if there actually is Pimms. I'm taking strawberries, crisps, and salsa. And possibly my staff; I can't decide yet.
Last night... was a bit stressful. But I think I can get the Expo without having to skip lectures, and still get to do everything I want to do. If I leave Cambridge right after my Saturday lectures, then I can be in London by 12.30, at the Expo by 1.30... just in time to join the giant Caramelldansen line! Hopefully. It doesn't take too long to get round the hall, so I should be able to do that before it closes at 6, then there's the cosplay ball! I need to start making my costume. Then there's the problem of where to stay overnight. Jay and Merrie and Jay's friends are getting a hotel room, and if their unconfirmed person doesn't come then I'll be able to stay with them. If not, I'll find somewhere. Hopefully at the same hotel. I'm not terribly keen on the idea of staying overnight in London by myself, but I'm sure it'll be fine.
...must make the goddamn dress! XP

12:11 am - Several music related things: 1) I should not want to slash Tuomas and Emppu from Nightwish on the basis that Emppu was looking at Tuomas. I shouldn't want to slash them at all!
2) How does dark-haired one from Apocalyptica concentrate on playing when he's moving around so much?
3) Blonde one from Apocalytica has a nice arse XD

Go to Wikipedia (http://www.wikipedia.org/). Enter your date of birth, then pick six events, three births, two deaths, and one holiday.
( July 8th )
Prizes if you can guess why I picked what I did - ie, why I think they're cool. And I mean actual prizes... well, actual fic, if you'd like it! Some of them have no real reason, to be honest... but others do XD

11:57 pm - Lists! Good things:
One of my pets on Gaia gets to breed - this is good mostly because of the associated plot, the fact that I get to hold an RP contest, and the fact that I may be able to give one of the babies to Cyc (if she wants it).
I'm back in the plot of another shop on Gaia.
I'm finally getting into Steamworks - must start RPing there too.
I finally have a Tea-Dragon, who will be very cute when she's grown up.
Bad things:
I'm hungry.

08:19 pm Wrote my first ever cheque of my own today. For an insanely large amount of money for a first time cheque, a scarily large amount of money for anyone who's just turned eighteen and doesn't really want to have to deal with finances right now... Also posted a couple of bits of paperwork off. Now all I need to do is send of my GCSE certificates to Sidney (by recorded delivery), and then I'm done with paperwork!
I should also really book a train ticket to York for Wednesday, and back from Swansea for next Monday. I can't wait til the end of this week... Camden will be fun ^w^
There's this shop on Gaia that's completely free, you just have to do the work yourself. I don't know what ever possessed me to think I could make it to colourist standard, but I am getting slightly better at using Photoshop. Here is... well... not exactly proof, but an example: http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y141/enaranie/Steamworks/ThomasTagcopy.png
And the girl I'm working on now: http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y141/enaranie/Steamworks%20WIP/Menchgirlcopy.png
I didn't do the lineart for either of them, just the colouring and shading. Well, no shading on girlie yet, because I fail at drawing on pupils so I need to find someone to help me out with that ^^;; Also, the tag for Thomas is not my work either XD

The effectiveness of this battle-cry is somewhat diminished by the fact that I don't believe in God.

11:36 pm "Cromwell [Court] is kind of falling apart & a little further away, but on the plus side it is named for a genocidal religious fanatic."
And that's where I'm going to be living, come October XD
The guy who said that is the LGBT rep. He said similarly amusing thins about the other accommodation. He seems awesome <3

04:39 pm - Results Day I'm in!! I'm going to Cambridge!
I am so freaking happy. I can hardly believe it. I have my four A grades that I needed, I got full marks in my chemistry paper, in my Latin translation, and one of my Physics papers! Overall I'm amazed how well I did in Physics. I only missed eight marks out of 300 XD
For those of you who may not know about UK universities - Cambridge is joint top in the country with Oxford. I say joint top because they switch places almost every year XD It's going to be bloody hard work, and I'll be with a load of extremely clever people and probably a fair few extremely posh people... but I just know I'm going to love it. And I'll be at university with pumpkinchao, which will be awesome <3
It seems all my friends did well too. merrie_oriensis is into Oxford with four A's herself, and my friend Chris is in to Cambridge, and my friend Erica got into Oxford! All Merrie's friends from G(r)eek Summer School have got in, too, which is great.
I got my letter today when I got back - I have a load of forms to fill in and send off, now, but also a load of useful and cool information.
Oh, and I might be in the newspaper. They certainly took photos of me and Merrie, and asked us loadsa questions... so they might pick us, or the twins, or some of the others they were talking to...
I'm off out tonight to celebrate with Merrie and Holly, and hopefully meet up with other people I know in town, too. It should be great fun. I just hope the rain slackens off a bit... Current Mood: ecstatic

11:36 am I'm on a train... this is going to be a rather boring journey. Yay. I get to go across London and then back to Wycombe - again. At least this time I get to do fun things afterwards. Merrie's parents are picking me up and we're going back to mine to watch The Tudors. The second series started while both of us were away, so it's on record ^^ It won't be the same without Compton, and with Tallis hooked up with that girl... and there'll be no Wolsey, either, and More dies in this series (I think...). Hopefully there will new awesome characters to make up for it.
I was going to update about yesterday (it was fun), but I csn't be bothered anymore... might just turn of my laptop, get the train magazine and read that. Or work on plotting the idea that revived itself in my head yesterday. Hmm...

11:38 am - Temeraire: His Majesty's Dragon I read too quickly, I think. Mind you, it was a damn good book, and more than worth the £1 it cost me! Even though it looked good, and I'd seen it before, and it's festooned with quoted praise from authors I respect, I didn't think it would be that good. But it was.
The book in question is His Majesty's Dragon, the first of the Temeraire sequence by Naomi Novik. The best explanation of it is given by the blurb, so I quote: "When HMS Reliant captures a French frigate and seizes its precious cargo, a unhatched dragon egg, fate sweeps Captain Will Laurence from his seafaring life into an uncertain future - and an unexpected kinship with a most extraordinary creature."
The book is set during the Napoleonic Wars, only in an alternate reality where aerial combat on dragon-back is an important part of the war. It's written in rather a formal style, reflecting the noble origins of Captain Laurence, although the majority of the aviators are less formal. One review compared it to Jane Austen, which is probably reasonable, although Austen bores me and this certainly did not - probably because of the very different subject matter. Still, there are hints of Austen's world amongst the high fantasy. The same review compared it to Eragon, which is a mistake - it's far better. It's not perfect; the mixture of Austen-style and fantasy does come off oddly, but as long as you don't think too hard about it, it's fine. I suppose the world doesn't seem quite natural.
Anyway, there are three or four sequels, which I must look for now. I shall leave you with a quote from another review, which I agree with wholeheartedly: "Naomi Novik's Temeraire is exactly what a first novel ought to be: well written, tightly plotted, and full of day-to-day, matter-of-fact wonder. She's done for the Napoleonic Wars what Anne McCaffrey did for science-fiction: constructed an alternate reality in which dragons are real and which is completely internally consistent, impressively original, fully developed, and peopled with characters you care about. It's not often I can unreservedly recommend a first novel. This one I can. And I do." (David Weber, New York Times-bestselling author of the Honor Harrington series)

04:51 pm - Family History: first steps I'm hungry.
Today has been pretty productive, in a weird way. I've spent most of it doing research into my family tree. I have a bit of paper going back... six or so generations, depending if you count me as a generation, and I've been working from that. One of my ancestors was called "Zilpah"; she and her husband had eight children. Also, her husband Joseph wasn't living with them during one of the censuses. We think he might have been in a war.
One of their children was called Keziah, and she had a daughter out of wedlock when she was seventeen! Her daughter ended up living with Keziah's brother, while Keziah disappeared... and then reappeared ten years later living with her other brother. It's all very scandalous and mysterious XD
We also think Zilpah's husband Joseph's father (John) might have been in a war; at the age of 35, he was a pensioner. He died (if we found the right one), aged 42. We've ordered his death certificate, and hopefully it'll say what he died of - maybe an old injury? Oh, and his residence (with his wife and four children) was at one point "Aldbury, foot of the hill"! So they lived in a caravan or something, we think.
We've ordered... John's death certificate, his son Daniel's birth certificate (born shortly after his father's death, we think), Keziah's illegitimate daughter's birth certificate (in case it has father's name or any details), and Zilpah and Joseph's marriage certificate. They should arrive with in a week. I'm stupidly excited about this. It's great fun! Current Mood: hungry

09:45 pm - A List. 1. My sister has decided she hates my brother. Because he wouldn't let her use his phone. I can't wait until she grows up a bit and stops being so... teenage.
2. I'm thinking of doing the "read 50 books in a year" challenge. Two of my flist (possibly more, I dunno) are doing it. The only thing is, I'd want to backdate and include things like The Lies of Locke Lamora, and I have no idea when I starting reading that. Plus, I don't think I'll have so much time for reading when I'm at university. Maybe I'll wait, and start it at the New Year.
3. I'm reading classic sci-fi. I bought an Asimov novella and two books of short stories, and an R A Lafferty novella - 50p each from a charity shop. The Asimov novella - The Stars Like Dust - was pretty good, even if I thought the ending was ridiculous. It had a certain polishedness about it. The Lafferty novella, The Devil is Dead, is weird. Weirder than Catch-22. I'm getting used to the style, but I'm still not convinced it's a book I'll end up liking.
4. I should stop thinking about Pete. I'm not going to be able to see him until I get back from Yorkshire - possibly later, depending how long he's in Germany for. I just looked at the dates for the thing he's going to, and we should be back at the same time. I hope so.
5. Went to Brighton today. It was nice. I could so live there! I caught the sun a bit, and I think it'll turn into tan rather than burn, which is good. Everywhere had posters and signs and flags up about the Pride Parade on Saturday, and I think I want to go to a Pride Parade now. Only I can't go to that one. I need to look up dates and places and things. It's just that from what I've heard, it'd be great fun, and plus it's a show of support, and I've never really had the chance to yake part in anything big and public and supportive. Well, and I'd get to ogle drag queens...
6. I actually started writing a Lux Nova RP reply. Go me. Current Mood: contemplative

08:48 pm - Photos, gossip and the like I suck at updating ^^;;
Not sure exactly when I last updated, but on Sunday I went with my family to Windsor Castle, which was pretty good. It would have been better if they'd let me loiter as long as I wanted and read all the info and actually look at everything knowing what it was. Especially the weapons. I feel the need to write something involving a house with arrangements of weapons on the wall - I love that. I have various photos, but none interesting enough to post.
Yesterday I went to see the financial advisor again, and fill in application forms. Soon I will have investments. It's terrifying. Or would be if i didn't have him and my dad to help.
There was also a storm, and I hung out of the window trying to take photos. I got about 250, of which I've kept nine and five are worth posting.
( here they are )
I'm planning to play around with them on photoshop, so I might be posting edited versions too.
Today I went into Wycombe, orginally with family, but... well. It was Lisa's birthday, so a group of us we're supposed to go see The Dark Knight. I turned up, and Aya, and we wandered round and chatted (so much fun; I miss Aya when I don't see her often enough <3 ), and then Mel turned up. But not Lisa. We got to the cinema, phoned her, she thought it was being postponed... Mel went home, but Aya and I stayed, and we went to see the film anyway XD
It was good. I'd forgotten how pretty Heath Ledger is. Even in that make-up. He was good in it. The Joker was suitably creepy, as well as gorgeous - this time not in an attractive sense, just in a design sense. The girl - Rachel? - was annoying, and so was blondie - Harvey Dent - (until the end anyway, then I began to like the character), but Batman / Bruce Wayne was good. He was more attractive than I expected.
It was, overall, more human than I expected. And the ending could have been cliched, but wasn't - it was just fitting. Oh, I should say that it was rather angsty. I liked that, but Aya wasn't so keen.
I also found out some slightly interesting gossip. A friend who I never thought was the type has slept with her boyfriend (her first boyfriend, who she can't have been seeing for much longer than about a month), and another friend flipped out and threatened to kill him! But if friend #1 is fine, then I don't see the problem. Makes me glad I wasn't invited to the party where said flipping-out occurred XD
Also, the fact that Lisa, and friend #1, and my brother are in relationships right now kinda makes me want to hook up with my ex again. I say hook up because we were never even nearly serious. It was always casual and just for a couple of months. I just don't know what he'd think about it. I'd like to, just for the rest of the summer, just for fun. But he might think that I'll sleep with him, and I don't think I would. I mean, hell, it depends on the situation, but I don't really intend to have sex until I'm in a vaguely serious-ish relationship. And then once the first time is over with I'll care less XD
...uh, anyway. I'll stop with the TMI now.

09:16 pm - Steampunk, anyone? Blame Cyc. Blame Steamworks on Gaia. All I know is, I've found my fashion aspiration. Did that make sense? Me + Steampunk = love! <3
Your result for The Steampunk Style Test... The Ragamuffin
You are the Ragamuffin, the embodiment of steampunk playfulness. Chances are, you approach the genre from a much more casual and lighthearted standpoint than most other fans. To you, there is always an element of play inherent in the genre, and you may very well enjoy fashion as much for the opportunity to dress up as for the style itself. You probably wear goggles as an accessory, and rarely as actual eye-protection. Your outfits are likely to incorporate a lot of brown or cream, and combine large boots, Victorian corsets or vests, aviator caps or bowler hats, and gypsy skirts or slacks, simply because you like them all. 08:34 pm - Greece! Finally, here you go. All about my eight days in Greece. Enjoy.
---
I kept a travel journal in Greece. Mostly so that I had a legitimate use for the cute notebook I got for my birthday, but it did turn out to be quite fun. So that’s what I’m going to be using as reference for this entry, and therefore it’s all organised by date.
( Gravity is *not* my friend, I’m in an aeroplane! )
I think the best things about being back in the UK are not being too hot all the time, having clean feet (seriously, our feet and legs got so dirty walking round Athens), and having decent tea. Shows what a caffeine addict I am, although I think I survived pretty well.
I have eight hundred photos (and that’s just mine, not the others’), and I need to go through them all before picking which ones to upload, so that might take a while. But I promise they’ll be up soonish. Before the end of the week, hopefully.
Along with those pictures will most likely be pics of the stuff I bought while I was there, and a list of stupid things that were said.
